My 5 year old is dealing with some nasty congestion right now.  Her poor little nose is rubbed raw from wiping, so now she's just letting it run down her face.  She happens to think it's rather funny when she can blow snot bubbles.  If you have a little one you know what that looks like, so I'll spare you the picture.  I was just using some of my homemade healing salve (recipe to come in a later blog), but I thought I should make something up to address the dryness AND the congestion.

Ingredients

1/4 C Coconut Oil
1/4 C Fractionated Coconut Oil (or another healthy liquid oil)
1 1/2 TB Beeswax
1/4 tsp Arrowroot Starch*
1/4 tsp Vitamin E
15 drops Respiratory Blend essential oil
15 drops Eucalyptus essential oil
10 drops Peppermint essential oil
10 drops Rosemary essential oil

*I add the arrowroot starch to cut down on the greasy feeling of the oils.

Directions

  1. Melt the Coconut Oil and Beeswax in a double boiler (I use a 2 Cup Pyrex container in a small saucepan with about a cup of water in it) over medium heat.
  2. Once melted, remove from heat and add in arrowroot starch.  Mix thoroughly with a fork until all the clumps are broken up.
  3. Add in the rest of the ingredients and mix again to incorporate the ingredients together.
  4. At this point I place my Pyrex dish in a bowl of ice to cool the mixture down quickly.  After the mixture is starting to thicken I whip it up with a hand mixer (this isn't a necessary step, but I like the whipped texture).
To use apply to neck, chest and/or feet.  I love this recipe because it contains no petroleum products like a lot of store bought remedies do.  I hope this works for your "littles" just as well as it worked for mine :)
